"GAKI KYOSAI"

• Kyosai Kawanabe observed and sketched a wide variety of things from his childhood. Known as a prolific painter, he worked in a wide range of genres, including paintings and woodblock prints as well as caricatures. He was also active in the "Calligraphy and Painting Society," an exhibition that flourished until the early Meiji period, in which he exhibited many of his works. In 1881, he published "Kyosai Manga," which is the subject of this shirt. Although he was only 57 years old at the time of his death, his caricatures and cartoons, drawn with drawing ability and eccentric ideas that astonished even his masters, are considered to have laid the foundation for modern animation and cartoons and are widely supported. In this design, the "Kyosai manga" is printed using black as the base color and a gradation of subdued colors throughout. Skeletons emerging from the darkness are expressed on this Aloha shirt. The scene of skeletons standing in various poses, drawn with a touch of dynamism, gives a strong impression to the viewer.
