• This work depicts Uoei, the wholesaler of illustrated storybooks of the Edo period dealing with Nishiki-e, which had a store on what is now Ueno Hirokoji at the end of the Edo period. This gorgeous work depicts a "merchant" from among the samurai, farmers, artisans, and merchants, with only women. The large Kanji "東錦絵 (Higashi Nishiki-e)" is also dyed through on the store curtain, indicating that Nishiki-e was popular as a specialty of Edo.
  
  Looking into the store, there is a display of actor pictures and landscapes, and the advertisement for "名所江戸百景 (Meisho Edo Hyakkei - One Hundred Famous Views of Edo)" is painted on the left wall. This "Uoei" was a very popular wholesaler of illustrated storybooks of the Edo period that published many famous Nishiki-e works, including those by "Utagawa Hiroshige", "Secound-generation Hiroshige", and this work's artist, "Third-generation Toyokuni".
  
  Utagawa Kunisada (Third-generation Toyokuni), who created this Ukiyo-e, was born in Temmei 6 (1786) in the family of a lumber wholesaler in Honjo, Edo (Tokyo). His paintings of beautiful women were distinctive and he quickly became a popular artist. Furthermore, his reputation for his Yakusha-e (portrayals of actors) was also extremely high, and he was regarded as having surpassed even his master, first-generation Utagawa Toyokuni. He was highly motivated to produce works, and left behind the most works than any other Ukiyo-e artist of the time, said to number more than 10,000.
