"DARUMA"

仏教禅宗の開祖である達磨大師が坐禅する姿を模したとされる「だるま」。象徴的な赤色には魔除けの意味があり、江戸時代に天然痘が流行した際、疱瘡除けのお守りとして赤いだるまを用いたことから広まったとされている。その日本の風習はハワイに渡った日系移民たちにも語り継がれていった。祖国を離れ、見知らぬ土地での生活を強いられた日系移民の心の支えになっていたもの。それは日本の文化や習慣であった。縁起物を身につけることもそのひとつで、アロハシャツには吉祥のモチーフが多く用いられたが、ヴィンテージにおいて「だるま」が描かれたシャツは非常に珍しく、希少価値が高い。

日系の生地コンバーターとして日本の大手生地商社「市田」と共に、日本製のレーヨン壁縮緬やシルク羽二重、ポリネシアン・プリントなどの生地を輸入し、ハワイのローカルブランドに卸売りしていた「S・ハタ商店」。同社が製作したこの作品は、当時の日系移民が祖国日本へ馳せた想いが伝わる一枚となっている。
