USS LEXINTON CVA-16 - "SUKA EMBROIDERY"
- Made of thick melton wool fabric, the Pea Coat has maintained its iconic form since the early 1900s and continues to enjoy exceptional popularity among Navy officers. A notable customization of this Pea Coat took place when the crew of USS Lexington, CVA-16, made a port call at Yokosuka. In order to create a one-of-a-kind jacket, Navy officers would bring their Pea Coats to the local tailor shop located in the Navy Exchange at Yokosuka base. Over the years, Yokosuka has been home to numerous skilled embroidery shops, attracting many American soldiers who sought out these establishments for their specially customized "Souvenir Jackets" or "Squadron Patches."
