Souvenir jackets (Sukajan) were first made around the immediate postwar period when U.S. soldiers embroidered oriental patterns (eagle, tiger, dragon) and the name of their unit or base on their jackets to commemorate their stationing in Japan. These jackets were sold as souvenirs at PX (Post Exchange = a common name for stores on U.S. military bases) around the country.
At that time, "KOSHO-SYOKAI", the predecessor company of "Toyo Enterprise", delivered Sukajans and other clothing products to U.S. military bases. In the 1950s, the heyday of Sukajan production, the company held a 95% share of the delivery market, and for more than half a century since then, it has continued to produce Souvenir jackets as part of a cultural heritage rather than a transient boom.
