"讃岐院眷属をして為朝をすくふ図 (Tametomo Rescued by Tengu Sent by Sanuki-in)"
- “Tametomo Rescued by a Tengu Sent by Sanuki-in,” renowned as a masterpiece by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. It depicts a scene from the novel "Chinsetsu Yumihari-zuki" by the popular author Kyokutei Bakin. Tametomo Minamoto’s ship, heading for the capital to defeat Taira no Kiyomori, encounters a storm. In an attempt to calm the raging sea, Tametomo’s wife, Shiranui, throws herself overboard. However, the storm does not subside, and just as Tamemoto, overcome with grief, is about to commit seppuku, he is saved by a tengu sent by the spirit of Sanuki-in. Meanwhile, Tamemoto's eldest son, Sutemaru, and his retainer, Ki Heiji, are saved by a giant crocodile shark. This work features a dynamic composition that skillfully arranges these three scenes across three large-format panels. It strongly reflects Kuniyoshi’s new artistic expression, which incorporated ideas and techniques from Western painting—such as the fantastical depiction of the tengu, a mythical creature, in light ink; the portrayal of the “wani-zame,” inspired by crocodiles seen in books; and the generous use of the “blue” pigment, which had only recently been introduced from overseas at the time.
