"亀" (TURTLE)
- Hokusai's series of flower and bird paintings with auspicious themes. In addition to this "Turtle," there are also "Cherry Blossom with Hawk," "Carp Ascending a Waterfall," "Cranes on Branch of Snow-covered Pine," and "Horses in Pasture." In this work, the flow of water is expressed by a blue blur that runs diagonally across the screen, and three turtles floating in the water are depicted from the perspective of looking down from above. The lowest turtle, with algae on its shell, is a symbol of longevity, and along with the parent turtle, the child and grandchild turtles are also depicted, expressing the prosperity of descendants. Additionally, this series of flower and bird paintings was created in a vertical format known as “Large-sized Format”, as a substitute for auspicious hanging scrolls. Upon viewing the original, it is evident that Hokusai used indigo pigment for the blue sections of the water surface. Following this example, this Aloha shirt is also characterized by its use of indigo pigment for dyeing. Furthermore, while silver was used for the turtle’s head in the original, it was deemed unsuitable for the shirt, so a silver-colored pigment resembling the original’s color scheme was used instead.
