"踊り(DANCE)"
- A kyoka print produced by Hokusai in collaboration with the Asakusa-gawa, a group of kyoka poets led by Asakusa-an Ichindo, a late Edo-period kyoka poet. Unlike commercially available ukiyo-e, surimono are woodblock prints specially commissioned for distribution and exchange among members of the haikai and kyoka communities. Because they circulated only among a limited circle of people, they were prized as rare and luxurious works. In this print, taking full advantage of the vertical format known as the “pillar-print” (hashira-e) format, Hokusai vividly depicts the facial expressions, gestures, costumes, and patterns of people overlapping in a composition depicting them enjoying a Bon dance. Furthermore, the seven men and women are believed to represent the Seven Gods of Good Fortune (Daikokuten, Ebisu, Fukurokuju, Bishamonten, Hotei, Benzaiten, and Kichijoten), making this a highly auspicious design rich in symbolic blessings.
