- There is an old Japanese legend that says, "After a hundred years, gods and spirits dwell in objects and play pranks on people." Based on this folk belief, spirits dwelling in objects came to be called Tsukumogami and were depicted as yokai in paintings. Unlike ghost paintings, which were drawn to instill fear in people, these paintings are characterized by their friendly style.
The yokai depicted in Ito Jakuchu's “Tsukumogami-zu,” which is the subject of this work, also shows such characteristics. The faint light is expressed through gradients. In the dark space where the light faintly shines, the Tsukumogami are lined up. The ones in the foreground are yokai that have become tsukumogami from tea utensils such as teapots, water jugs, and tea bowls that have been used for many years. Following them are Tsukumogami from candlesticks, bird helmets (decorative items shaped like phoenix heads used in court music and dance), biwa (Japanese lute), drums, and various other utensils.
Ito Jakuchu was born in 1716 into a family of vegetable merchants in Kyoto, but he had no interest in anything other than painting and even abandoned his family business to live in the mountains. His extraordinary talent manifested itself in his works as eccentric ideas, which continue to fascinate people even today.
In expressing Ito Jakuchu's work as an Aloha shirt, this “YOKAI” shirt has been designed by switching the front panels on the left and right sides and changing the brown-toned original artwork to a navy color scheme, creating a modern impression. - Title of the Work: YOKAI
