- This MA-1 with patches is reproduced by "Buzz Rickson's" based on a vintage jacket. The 2nd Bomb Wing is one of only two B-52H Stratofortress squadrons currently in the U.S. Air Force. The 96th Bombardment Squadron was reorganized on July 1, 1947, under the Strategic Air Command and equipped with Boeing B-29 Superfortresses. After the war, the unit was trained for strategic bombing missions and upgraded in 1948 to the new Boeing B-50 Superfortress, capable of carrying atomic bombs. In 1954, the propeller-driven B-50s were replaced with the newer Boeing B-47E Stratjet, a medium-range bomber with a swept-wing design. This aircraft was capable of subsonic flight and was designed primarily to penetrate Soviet airspace. In 1963, the squadron was awarded the Fairchild Trophy, given to the top bomber unit in the combined fields of navigation and bombing. Active for over 60 years, the 2nd Bomb Wing was one of the wings that constituted the Strategic Air Command’s heavy bomber deterrent throughout the Cold War. The patch from this era is a striking design in line with the patch regulations for elite Strategic Air Command squadrons, with the triangular 96th Bomb Squadron insignia making a powerful impression.
