- The “Souvenir Jacket” (Sukajan) is said to have originated as a memento for U.S. soldiers stationed in Japan after World War II, with emblems of their units and other designs embroidered on them. KOSHO, the predecessor of Toyo Enterprises, was involved in its creation. As a trading company established after the dissolution of the zaibatsu, KOSHO was involved in importing and exporting fabrics and had deep ties to the fabric used in Aloha shirts.
This Aloha shirt, now in its third time reproduction, features the print of the eagle, tiger, and dragon, which was the most popular design among the souvenir jackets produced by KOSHO. At the time, all fabrics featuring Oriental designs (traditional Japanese patterns) printed on kabe-crepe material were produced in Japan, and the Aloha shirt movement that swept through postwar Hawaii and the U.S. mainland had a significant impact on Japan as well. This piece was originally produced by KOSHO for sale at U.S. military PXs (base stores), and it is an extremely rare item labeled with the “FASHION MART” brand—used by KOSHO when exporting overseas. - Brand: FASHION MART (KOSHO & CO.)
