- 第2爆撃航空団は、現在アメリカ空軍に2つしかないB-52Hストラトフォートレス飛行隊のうちの1つである。第96爆撃飛行隊は1947年7月1日に戦略航空軍団隷下で再編成され、ボーイングB-29スーパーフォートレスを装備した。戦後は戦略爆撃任務のために訓練され、1948年に新型の原子爆弾搭載可能なボーイングB-50スーパーフォートレスにアップグレードされた。1954年にプロペラ駆動のB-50を新型のボーイングB-47Eストラトジェット後退翼中型爆撃機に置き換えた。これは亜音速飛行が可能で、主にソ連の空域に侵入するために設計された。1963年には航法と爆撃の複合分野で最優秀の爆撃部隊に授与されるFairchid Trophyを受賞している。60年以上にわたり活動した第2爆撃航空団は、冷戦期を通じて戦略航空軍の重爆撃機抑止力を構成する航空団の一つであった。パッチはこの時代のエリート、戦略航空軍隷下飛行隊のパッチレギュレーションに沿った華やかのもので、三角形の第96爆撃飛行隊章が猛烈なインパクトを放っている。
