- The history of Hawaiian workwear, the origin of the aloha shirts, begins when Japanese immigrants crossed the ocean and began living in Hawaii. Working there required durable workwear, not Japanese-style clothing brought from Japan. When Japanese-born Yasuda Kayoji founded "The UNION SUPPLY Company" in 1922, he expanded the business by successfully providing high-quality workwear. The company's shirt blouses made of the 10-ounce Palaka plaid fabric were simple construction, yet durable and easy to move in, and quickly gained popularity and became a representative model of Palaka.
