TSUKIOKA YOSHITOSHI SPECIAL EDITION "NEW STORY"

• The title of this work, “Nise Murasaki inaka Genji,” is a long novel in which the author Ryutei Tanehiko replaced the world of Murasaki Shikibu's “The Tale of Genji” from the Heian period to the Muromachi period, and published it with illustrations by Utagawa Kunisada (the third generation of Utagawa Toyokuni). Published from Bunsei12(1829), the work consists of 38 volumes (four volumes each, totaling 152 volumes) and is considered one of the works that contributed to the development of Edo literature. Later, in the Meiji period, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka created the Triptych Large-sized Nishiki-e (color woodblock print) depicting a scene from five volumes of the same work. The scene depicted is one in which Ashikaga Mitsuuji and his lover, Tasogare, take refuge from the rain in an old temple. As they prepare to spend the night there, Tasogare's mother, Shinonome, who has transformed into a demoness wearing a mask, attacks them.
  Tsukioka Yoshitoshi was a ukiyo-e artist who was active from the late Edo period to the Meiji period. He studied under Utagawa Kuniyoshi and began painting warrior pictures at the age of 15, establishing himself as an artist. He led the ukiyo-e world during the turbulent transition from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era and is often referred to as the “last ukiyo-e artist.”
  In expressing Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's works as the Aloha shirt, this Aloha shirt “NEW STORY” uses the entire shirt to arrange the original artwork and combines gradients to create a dynamic piece.
