- These loose-straight jeans are made using STUDIO D’ARTISAN’s original 13.5 oz “Ishikawadai Denim.” This is a carefully crafted denim that prioritizes texture and the recreation of history over efficiency. “Ishikawadai” refers to the ring spinning machine manufactured in 1953 by Ishikawa Seisakusho Co., Ltd., which is currently the oldest operating ring spinning machine in Japan. The cotton used is commonly known as “Deep South Cotton,” harvested in the Lower Rio Grande Valley—the southernmost tip of Texas, bordering Mexico. This cotton, grown vigorously on American soil, has a firm texture and resilience, making it the ideal material for achieving a rough, dry feel. To preserve the unique texture of this cotton, the standard yarn refining process is intentionally omitted for the indigo-dyed warp yarn. Careful attention has been paid to achieve the distinctive, uneven indigo dyeing of the warp yarns, just like vintage denim from that era. To recreate the denim of 1953, every step of the production process was intentionally carried out using low-tech methods. Since cotton thread is used for the stitching, you can enjoy the natural fading of the stitches as the denim ages.
