"GAUGUIN WOODCUT MYSTIC"

- This Aloha shirt from Sun Surf's special edition is reproduced based on vintage shirts. Founded in 1936 as a military auxiliary organization to manufacture uniforms for the U.S. Army and Navy, Kamehameha Garment Co. later grew into one of Hawaii’s largest apparel manufacturers. KAMEHAMEHA was the company’s brand, and it left behind several masterpieces for posterity, such as the anthurium design that made full use of multicolored discharge printing. One such masterpiece is “GAUGUIN WOODCUT,” which is highly regarded as a work of art even in the vintage market. This masterpiece was created by textile designer John Meigs, who collaged the woodcut works of painter Paul Gauguin; however, there are actually two distinct designs featuring different versions of the main female motif. One theory suggests the difference came from changing the pattern during the fabric-cutting process. Another theory suggests that John Meigs changed the main motif at the request of Kamehameha Garment Co. at the time. While various theories circulate, none go beyond speculation, and the work remains shrouded in mystery to this day. In response to numerous requests, Sun Surf has now reissued the “MYSTIC” version (featuring the main female motif standing upright), first reproduced in 2014.
