- The first official immigrants from Japan to Hawaii were 150 craftsmen and farmers recruited from Tokyo and Kanagawa by Van Reed, the Hawaiian consul stationed in Yokohama. Known as the “first settlers,” they crossed the ocean to Hawaii with hopes for the future, but life there was much harder than they had imagined. Thus, they longed for their homeland, Japan, and the ancient Japanese custom of carrying omens and seeking good fortune continued unchanged in Hawaii. This had a significant influence on the culture of Aloha shirts, leading to a trend of wearing Aloha shirts with motifs of good luck charms.

The original of this work was created around 1940 by "SURFRIDERS SPORTSWEAR", which opened as a gift shop on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki. It originally began as a "sewing shop" in downtown Honolulu that custom-made pennants, emblems, and flags. The shop also made shirts and dresses, and sold them as original items at the SURFRIDERS SPORTSWEAR store in Waikiki to tourists. Also, unusually for a Hawaiian brand at the time, it sold a significant number of items by mail order. - Brand: SURFRIDERS SPORTSWEAR
