• The 1950s, the heyday of Hawaiian shirts. Among the textile designers who were active at that time, there is a person who stands out. That is John Meigs. The works he left behind received strong support from vintage collectors, and all of them were highly evaluated, and there are many collectors who started collecting Hawaiian shirts because they were fascinated by the works of Meigs. Among the designs he worked on in the 1940s and 1950s, unpublished works, that were not commercialized at the time and remained in storage, exist. It was Sunsurf that was entrusted by Meigs to release them as Hawaiian shirts, and the "Keoni of Hawaii" started with that. This "HOOLAULEA IN HAWAII" is the work released in 1998, as the Keoni label of the beginning, under the supervision of Meigs himself. The motif is the cover of the menu used in the restaurant of the luxury liner "Matson Line" that was sailing between San Francisco and Hawaii. Based on the menu design designed by the painter Eugene Savage, this is the work was reconstructed in a planar by Meigs. In response to many requests received every year, the legend revives by Sun Surf for the first time in 23 years, with a color scheme that was not commercialized in 1998.

KEONI OF HAWAII
In 1996, Sun Surf discovered that the legendary textile designer, John "Keoni" Meigs, who had had a great contribution behind the development of the Hawaiian shirt history, was well alive. By meeting him in person, Sun Surf could also encounter many of his unpublished designs from the 1940's. These, along with his newly created designs, had been put into production under the name of "Keoni of Hawaii" for several years until his advanced age deterred him from creating more. In 2001, this series was succeeded by other artists who sympathize with John's motto: Have the Hawaiian shirts be the bridge between Hawaii and Japan. Today, his great ambition toward the Hawaiian shirts still continues to be passed down through one and only shirt designs created by the artists all around the world.
