"VF-24 LAST GUNFIGHTERS"

• This Type G-1 leather jacket with patches is reproduced by "Buzz Rickson's", based on vintage jackets. The original jacket of the G-1 was worn by Navy pilots who fought in several wars in the Pacific, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. The 38th Fighter Squadron patch on the right sleeve indicates that the wearer was a member of this squadron at the end of the Pacific War. Since the 38th Fighter Squadron was closed after the war in 1946, it is assumed that the wearer left active duty at this point and was transferred to the reserves. And since the 51st Fighter Squadron patch is on the left chest, it is assumed that the wearer learned of the outbreak of the Korean War and requested to be reinstated to the actual combat unit. It is not difficult to imagine that he flew Grumman F9F Panther jet fighters to the fullest in the 51st Fighter Squadron. The wearer seems to have remained in the active duty unit, with a patch on his right chest from the 24th Fighter Squadron, to which he was next assigned. The 24th Fighter Squadron was the squadron that began operating the boat F8U Crusader supersonic fighter in 1957, and was sent to the Vietnam theater in 1964. The F8U (later renamed F-8) was a fighter equipped with a 20mm machine gun, and since its successor, the McDonnell F-4 Phantom II fighter, had no fixed armament and carried only air-to-air missiles, the F8U became known as the last Gunfighter of the US Navy. And since the 24th Fighter Squadron was the last F-8 fighter squadron in the U.S. Navy, it became known as the Last Gunfighter in the 1970s. The back of the jacket is stenciled to commemorate its honor.
