• The artwork used for this Aloha shirt is a Ukiyo-e painting drawn for use as a Uchiwa (Japanese paper fan) and is called Uchiwa-e. Most of the existing pieces were not used as Uchiwa but were displayed for ornamental purposes and Uchiwa-e were painted by Kuniyoshi and other Ukiyo-e artists at that time and became very popular.
  Kuniyoshi was very famous as a cat lover among people living in Edo. Many of his works featuring cats have been discovered and are kept in museums and galleries as archives. One of his most famous works is "Neko no Suzumi" (CATS ENJOYING THE EVENING COOL). It depicts a group of cats going out on a Yakatabune (Japanese houseboat) to enjoy the evening cool. A boatman's cat and a guest's cat welcome a Geisha cat. The Geisha cat holds an abalone in its hand, and the title "Neko no Suzumi" is framed by dried bonito flakes. This work is filled with the humor of Kuniyoshi, a cat lover.
  The artist, Kuniyoshi Utagawa, was recognized since an early age for his exceptional drawing ability and became an apprentice to Toyokuni Utagawa. Later, he worked in a wide range of fields, including landscapes, portraits of beautiful women, and paintings of actors. When Kuniyoshi was 30 years old, he became famous as a "Ukiyo-e artist of strange ideas" because his painting "108 Heroes of the Suikoden," in which he depicted heroes from "Suikoden" as warrior paintings, was well-received.
