"神奈川沖波裏 (Kanagawa Oki Nami-Ura / The Great Wave of Kanagawa)"
- "Fugaku Sanju Roku-Kei (36 Views of Mount Fuji)" consisted of 46 pieces of paintings that Hokusai began drawing at the age of 71, was a huge hit coupled with the belief in Mt. Fuji at that time. This most famous work among these paintings is said to be one of the greatest masterpieces in Japanese art history. "Kanagawa Oki" meant off the coast of Kanagawa, a post town on the Tokaido, so we can consider that this painting depicted the scenery seen from the current Tokyo Bay. What you can see in the waves is an Oshi-Okuri-Bune (Boat) that carries fresh fish from Boso and Izu to Edo, and it is as if struggling against the big waves. Mt. Fuji stands in a neat figure to face the powerfully rising waves. The magnificent scenery is expressed by the contrast between static and dynamic. Hokusai chose Ai (indigo) as the dye for drawing waves. He was particularly stuck to the darkest blue areas, using the imported pigment "Bero-Ai (Berlin blue)", which was still difficult to obtain at the time. For this Aloha shirt, Ai pigment, which is the most similar to the one used by Hokusai, is adopted, and Sun Surf inherits that commitment.
