• The G-1 flight jacket adopted by the U.S. Navy, which met the Mil-J-7823 specification, was introduced in 1952 and was established to succeed the 55-J-14 specification. In the early 1950s, while the U.S. Air Force gradually switched to nylon flight jackets, the Navy stubbornly insisted on leather for its flight jackets and never altered the G-1 design itself. Around the same time the G-1 was adopted in the 1950s, the “souvenir jacket” and “sukajan” culture blossomed in Japan. These jackets, embroidered with unit emblems and other designs, served as mementos for U.S. soldiers stationed in Japan. The company involved in their creation was Kōshō Shōkai, the predecessor of Tōyō Enterprises. The lining used in this G-1 jacket is the fabric that Kōshō originally produced for souvenir jackets, featuring prints of eagles, tigers, and dragons—motifs that were already popular at the time. This fabric is a historic item that Kōshō Shōkai produced exclusively for sale at U.S. military PXs (base stores). Soldiers whose eyes were caught by the Japanese-patterned fabric handled by Koshō at the base stores came up with the idea of replacing the lining of their beloved G-1s with these oriental patterns. At the time, one of the outlets carrying Koshō’s fabric was the Navy Exchange at Yokosuka Base, and when the lining was replaced, that label was affixed. Although the luxurious lining is not visible from the outside, this secret sense of style known only to the wearer is the very essence of a dandy’s aesthetic.

This jacket is a faithful reproduction of the vintage jacket, and parts such as zipper are revived, based on the specifications at that time, so please handle the parts with care. In particular, the zipper may be damaged if it is forcibly raised or lowered. When pulling up the zipper, be sure to pull up the metal part of the zipper slowly and carefully. Please do not pull the leather string forcibly.
