PULLOVER SHIRT

• Waltah Clarke was an Aloha Goodwill Ambassador for the Hawaii Tourism Authority along with Duke Kahanamoku. He developed his namesake store, "Waltah Clarke's", in resort areas such as Beverly Hills, Las Vegas, and Hawaii. He moved to Hawaii from Los Angeles in 1937, and was once the best showman he could get used to as a beach boy in Waikiki, and was also famous as the general manager of the popular "Don the Beachcomber" restaurant in Hawaii at the time. He was also keenly aware of clothing trends, and when aloha shirts became popular in the 1950s, he established connections not only with Hawaiian brands but also with manufacturers and fabric distributors in the U.S. mainland to meet the rapidly growing demand. His wife Gretchen, who had a degree in textiles and a wealth of knowledge about clothing, joined in the production of the shirts, creating a series of innovative and original designs.
  The original (vintage) of "Surf Rider" reproduced by "Sun Surf" is made of Rayon-Fujiette fabric, and the textile was designed by post-impressionist painter Wolfgang Wolff. The print was done by Cohn Hall Marks (COHAMA), a major fabric manufacturer in New York. Two types of shirts have been identified: a pullover type, which is very rare for Hawaiian shirts in the 1950s, and an open shirt, and the number of both types of shirts in existence on the vintage market is very small, and they are highly valuable.
