- This Aloha shirt from Sun Surf's special edition is reproduced based on vintage shirts. The “Daruma” is said to be modeled after the figure of Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, in a sitting meditation posture. Its symbolic red color has the meaning of warding off evil spirits, and it is said to have become widespread after red Daruma were used as amulets against smallpox during an epidemic in the Edo period. This Japanese custom was passed down to Japanese immigrants who moved to Hawaii. For Japanese immigrants who left their homeland and were forced to live in unfamiliar lands, Japanese culture and customs served as a source of emotional support. Wearing lucky charms was one such practice. While many auspicious motifs were used for Aloha shirts, vintage shirts featuring a “Daruma” are extremely rare and highly valued.

As a Japanese-owned fabric converter, “S.HATA SHOTEN” imported Japanese-made fabrics—such as rayon kabe crepe, silk habutae, and Polynesian prints—and wholesaled them to local Hawaiian brands, much like the major Japanese fabric trading company “Ichida.” This design, created by the company, conveys the deep longing that Japanese immigrants of that era felt for their homeland, Japan. - Original: S.HATA SHOTEN (The Work of the late 1950)
