SENSUJI SHIRT BLOUSE
- This SEN-SUJI SHIRT BLOUSE with the vintage name "UNION SUPPLY" is reproduced by "Sun Surf" based on vintage jackets. Along with Palaka and Ahina (Hawaiian denim), another fabric should not be forgotten in the Hawaiian workwear culture created by Japanese immigrants. It is the striped fabric called “Daimyo Stripe” or “Sen-suji. These fabrics were produced in Japan and exported to Hawaii to provide heavy-duty yet flexible fabrics that were in demand due to the hard labor of the immigrants. The history of this fabric dates back to the Edo period. The design was born out of the culture of “ Iki,” enjoying fashion under various restrictions at a time when luxury was not allowed, and has its roots in the Matsuzaka cotton of Mie Prefecture. The advanced weaving techniques brought by spinning engineers invited from the continent made Matsuzaka a leading spinning town in Japan. Wholesalers who handled the fabrics also gathered in Matsuzaka, and their business was further accelerated by establishing a sales base in Edo. They achieved a great deal of success. Representative of this success are the current Mitsukoshi Department Store and Matsuzakaya Department Store. The striped designs that characterized Matsuzaka cotton were said to be available in more than 500 variations at the time, and they permeated the daily lives of the common people.
