The 1st Cavalry Division is the largest one under the United States Army's 3rd Corps, headquartered in Fort Hood, Texas. During the Vietnam War, helicopter units were newly formed centering on the UH-1 series and pioneered a new tactic of operating air soldiers in modern ground warfare. The 1st Cavalry Division operated more than 100 helicopters during the Vietnam War, and among them, the "Red" Platoon, which was organized by the 9th Cavalry Regiment, was born for the first time in this era when helicopters specialized in attacking were used. They were equipped with an armed UH-1B "Gunship" that retrofits a minigun and rocket launcher to the UH-1 series that was originally intended for transporting soldiers when deployed in Vietnam. In 1968, they were given the AH-1G "Cobra", which was developed as a fully armed attack helicopter, and ran through Vietnam's skies as a reliable companion to US Army soldiers until they returned to Fort Hood in 1973.
