The 1st Coastal Riverine Group was established in Saigon, South Vietnam, in 1966, during the Vietnam War. Its mission was to protect U.S. Navy port facilities in combat zones, primarily defending major naval ports in South Vietnam at the time. Once its personnel and equipment were in place, the unit became part of the amphibious warfare forces known as the “GATOR NAVY,” with its headquarters established at Long Beach, San Diego. “GATOR NAVY” is a nickname for amphibious forces composed primarily of U.S. Navy amphibious assault ships. These forces transport and deploy Marines from sea to shore and are capable of conducting amphibious operations, providing humanitarian assistance, and serving as rapid-response forces. Their ability to operate both at sea and on land inspired the nickname, likening them to alligators. The whimsical alligator patch sewn onto the jacket appears to have been custom-made at an embroidery shop when personnel visited Yokosuka, judging by the stitchwork of the lettering and overall style.
